What is the biblical role of a wife?
Our upbringing, culture, friends, and colleagues may influence how we view the role of a wife. However, a godly wife is not just defined by appearance, title, or even religious activity, but by her obedience to God’s Word.
As Luke 11:28 says, “Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and keep it.”
And so, we’ll use Scripture to dictate the path of our marriage. Here are six habits that define the biblical role of a wife.
1. Biblical Wives are Respectful
“However, let each one of you love his wife as himself, and let the wife see that she respects her husband” (Eph. 5:33).
Respect is a service to the Lord and the primary duty of a biblical wife to her husband. A godly wife actively notices and honors her spouse.
Respect is not fear in the sense of terror, but reverence for your husband in the position God has given him. Consider his needs and values, admire his wisdom, and appreciate his commitment and love for you.
Build him up with your words and actions. Speak kindly to him, speak well of him to others, value his opinions, and trust his leadership.
2. Biblical Wives are Submissive
“Wives, submit to your own husbands, as to the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife even as Christ is the head of the church, his body, and is himself its Savior. Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit in everything to their husbands” (Eph.5:22–24).
Just as the church submits to Christ as the head, a godly wife submits to the headship of her husband. Submission is voluntary, and it honors the relationship and everyone in it.
Submission is not about worth—we are all equal in the eyes of the Lord—it’s about family order. In other words, place yourself under the authority of your husband, who in turn submits to an even higher authority: Christ.
Submission does not lessen a wife’s dignity, and it doesn’t diminish her value or place in the kingdom. You’re not abandoning your gifts but expressing them fully for the good of your husband and marriage.
3. Biblical Wives are Pure in Conduct
“Likewise, wives, be subject to your own husbands, so that even if some do not obey the word, they may be won without a word by the conduct of their wives, when they see your respectful and pure conduct” (1 Pet. 3:1–2).
Our conduct speaks louder than words. A biblical wife carries herself well both at home and in public. She’s morally upright and ethical, and her actions glorify God and honor her husband.
A godly wife is holy and honest, and her actions match her words. She is supportive and humble, and her conduct flows from her deep reverence for God.
Remember that even if you are married to an unbeliever, your godly conduct can be a powerful tool for evangelism. Showing respect and submission in your conduct makes the gospel attractive.
Be virtuous and be the crown of your husband, as Proverbs 12:4 says, and you will bring him honor rather than shame.
4. Biblical Wives are Gentle
“Do not let your adorning be external—the braiding of hair and the putting on of gold jewelry, or the clothing you wear—but let your adorning be the hidden person of the heart with the imperishable beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which in God’s sight is very precious” (1 Pet. 3:3-4).
The gentle and quiet spirit is the fruit of trusting God. The biblical role of a wife refers to a calm, peaceful disposition that doesn’t manipulate or control to get its way. The inner beauty is imperishable and precious in God’s sight, and it makes a wife a true reflection of faith in her home.
Peter does not forbid Christian women from adorning themselves well. His point is that a gentle and quiet spirit is far more valuable than any external adornment, no matter how attractive.
Some of us are naturally energetic and effervescent; others are quiet and reserved. Even if you don’t love accessories and fancy hairstyles, this verse is still for you. The Word of God is written for all His children, regardless of personality. We all can meet this standard.
A godly woman has a gentle and quiet spirit not because of her temperament, but because she trusts God.
5. Biblical Wives are Loving
“And so train the young women to love their husbands and children” (Titus 2:4).
A godly wife shows affection to her husband. She’s friendly, warm, and delights in his company and is intentional about maintaining a loving relationship. This kind of love is unconditional acceptance, even though your husband is not perfect.
Such love may not always come naturally, which is why Scripture instructs older women to teach it to younger women. You have to learn and cultivate it, and whenever you feel like there’s something you’re missing or struggling with, reach out to an older woman of faith for guidance.
6. Biblical Wives are Kind
“To be self-controlled, pure, working at home, kind, and submissive to their own husbands, that the word of God may not be reviled” (Titus 2:5).
A godly wife is kind and treats her husband with love and compassion. She is considerate and seeks gentleness toward him in both her words and actions.
Kindness makes her a safe place for him—easy to live with, never harsh or antagonistic. Her words are gracious, and her home is a refuge. This integrity of character matters because it directly affects the reputation of the gospel.
As we saw under “Pure in Conduct,” when Christian wives are unkind, the word of God itself may be criticized.
Seek God First to be a Godly Wife
A biblical wife respects and submits to her husband. She is also pure in conduct, gentle, loving, and kind.
But remember that we can’t live out these biblical roles of a wife apart from Jesus. We should always put God first and abide in Him, and everything else, including being a wife, will follow.
John 15:4 says, “Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me.”
I pray that you find it easy to embrace these virtues of a godly wife.
Cheers to a happy and godly marriage!
