“Therefore, as you received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in him, rooted and built up in him and established in the faith, just as you were taught, abounding in thanksgiving.” Colossians 2:6–7
The preparations were complete, and our daughter’s wedding day was finally here! As we began celebrating that morning and all seemed to be in place, the whispers of discontentment among some guests became louder. Even as I clung to Jesus and repeated scripture in my mind, I could feel myself being pulled into a thick fog as the chaos churned. Admittedly, standing firm in Christ was a challenge at times, and I made some poor choices as I fought through the fog in my own strength. Yet, as an anchored boat can only drift a bit, Jesus, my anchor, gently pulled me back to Himself, reminding me that I am rooted, built up, and established in Him alone.
Chaos is a tool of the enemy that beckons to be center stage, attempting to steal our focus, joy, and peace. The more we walk with Jesus, the harder the enemy works to distract us with temptation. Jesus warned us this is part of being human (1 Cor. 10:13). We’re further tricked into feeling shame and ruminating on the situation, how we responded, and what we should have done differently. In the days following the wedding, the voice in my head said things like, You should have represented Jesus better. What example are you setting for your family, your daughter, and her new husband? Are you really anchored in Jesus?
However, the more we commune with the Lord, the more steadfast we become. Being anchored in Christ enables us to recall what Scripture says about who we are and whose we are, reminding us that the enemy’s attempts are futile because the Lord takes what the enemy meant for evil and turns it for good (Gen. 50:20). Jesus always triumphs!
If you find yourself in chaos (and humanly responding to it), remember that you are never condemned (Rom. 8:1)! Colossians 2:6–7 says you are rooted, built up, and established in Christ. In every moment, you are anchored and held by the Savior who loves you as your Shepherd, Protector, and Defender!
Prayer: Most Heavenly Father, thank You for being our unchanging, steadfast, and perfect Lord. No matter the fog swirling around us, as our anchor, You faithfully guide us back to the center of Your perfect will, where we find everlasting hope, peace, and joy. Holy Spirit, help us remember who we are and whose we are in every moment, and guide our words and actions to find Your perfect peace in the midst of chaos. For You are our great Shepherd, and we know You work all things together for our good. In Jesus’ mighty name, Amen.
