4 Reassuring Bible Verses for Healing and Strength

If you’re looking for Bible verses for healing and strength, you’re not alone.

My first thoughts waking up one morning recently in the midst of enduring a season of hardship were, Oh no, it’s morning? My mind hurts and I can’t seem to think straight. I am not ready for today.

I felt like my body was trying to pull my mind behind it like a child’s pull toy, coaxing it to come alive. Come on, focus, I thought.

I accidentally drifted back into sleep and had a short dream. In a completely restful state, I saw pages of Scripture. On every page, I saw my name. It was in the same typeface as the Bible, like it had always been there, but my name was in bold or maybe a different color, so it popped off the page.

After waking for the second time, I lingered in bed under the warm covers, thinking, It’s going to be okay. Whatever today brings, I am in His Word. It was a beautiful gift from God, preparing me for the day ahead.

That was a day I needed His healing and strength just to get out of bed. While my short dream didn’t show me exactly where in Scripture to find healing and strength, it gave me something even more vital: the confidence that God’s Word has what I need to carry me through the day.

Four Bible Verses for Healing and Strength in Hard Seasons

Let’s walk through a few Scripture passages that show us where to find healing and strength. As we do, we’ll consider how each verse invites us to speak God’s truth aloud, meditate deeply on His Word, and act in faithful obedience.

Using this pattern as a guide, we can pray with confidence, trusting that our God will provide, protect, and be present with us when we are in need of healing and strength.

1. Joshua 1:8

This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success.

The Lord spoke to Joshua with instructions similar to those He gave Moses, who by this time in the story was deceased, preparing the Israelites to enter the promised land. The command to be strong and courageous is repeated three times in four verses, but in verse 8, we learn the source of strength.

This command in Joshua 1:8 provided instructions for the Israelites in how they were to receive the words of God. Those instructions are just as true for us today.

The template for speaking, meditating, and acting provide a pattern for handling God’s Word in our daily lives, especially when we need courage and strength to face the difficulties of life. This is a pattern we can repeat as we seek healing and strength for our daily living, even when we don’t feel ready to face the day.

  • Speak: Rehearse to yourself God’s command to follow His Word, so you can then teach it to others (Deut. 6:6–9).
  • Meditate: The context here means to ponder, imagine, or study the Word. The Hebrew word for meditate, hagah, is also found in Psalm 1:1–3 which conveys a continual interaction with God’s instructions.
  • Act: We are to be careful to do what this command says. The instruction is to guard, treasure, and obey the Word. It is our source of life, trustworthy, and gives joy to our hearts (Ps. 19:7–11).

2. Proverbs 4:20–22

My son, be attentive to my words;
incline your ear to my sayings.
Let them not escape from your sight;
keep them within your heart.
For they are life to those who find them,
and healing to all their flesh.

This passage emphasizes the importance of paying attention to, listening to, understanding, and keeping God’s Word in your heart. The heart is where God’s Word shapes our character and decisions and builds wisdom. These verses also tie the Word to our health, both spiritual and physical.

  • Speak: Who can you share these truths with today?
  • Meditate: How do God’s words give life and bring hope to your circumstances, your fears, and weaknesses?
  • Act: Where can you trust God for healing today?

3. Psalm 107:19–20

Then they cried to the LORD in their trouble,
and he delivered them from their distress.
He sent out his word and healed them,
and delivered them from their destruction.

Psalm 107 speaks of God sending healing through His Word. The verse prior tells us they cried out to the Lord. Do you cry out to the Lord in your distress, or do you worry and complain within yourself or to others? This verse is clear and brings good instructions for us to consider.

  • Speak: Say this truth out loud several times. There is power in hearing ourselves speak Scripture.
  • Meditate: Imagine the Lord bringing healing to your fears, your physical needs, and your mental struggles. Journal and ask God to deliver each one with thanksgiving for His steadfast love.
  • Act: When you are feeling less than confident that the Lord is faithful to deliver, ask Him to bring people to mind or into your life whom you can share your needs with. Also, ask Him to open your eyes to see the special blessings He has just for you each day.

4. Psalm 27:1, 13–14

The LORD is my light and my salvation;
whom shall I fear?
The LORD is the stronghold of my life;
of whom shall I be afraid?

I believe that I shall look upon the goodness of the LORD
in the land of the living!
Wait for the LORD;
be strong, and let your heart take courage;
wait for the LORD!

One of my favorite verses in Scripture is found in Psalm 27. When David wrote this song, light in the Near Eastern context symbolized guidance and truth, and a stronghold referred to a fortified place of refuge and safety.

The first and last verses are words I cling to and pray often, and they remind us of the instruction in Joshua and where we place our trust.

  • Speak: Read this aloud over yourself and read it to others as a prayer and declaration of truth. Memorize it, hide it in your heart, and carry it with you.
  • Meditate: Ask God to show you in your life where He is your light and stronghold. Sometimes what we see and feel can be overwhelming and louder than the truth. And that’s okay if you feel this. Jesus is able to handle our fear and questions.
  • Act: Some of the actions in this verse are “wait,” “be strong,” and “take courage.” Waiting begins with trust, and you can find strength and healing in the mighty power of God (Eph. 6:10).

Finding Healing and Strength Through God’s Word

During a very difficult time in my life, when I cried out to God from my pit of despair and depression, He gave me clear instructions to write a verse of Scripture every day for my healing.

I opened my journal and wrote one verse every day for nearly a year. Gradually, my desire for the Lord grew, and I began to want more. I read the Word, asked God questions to understand how to apply it to my life, and prayed the Word back to Him when my own words failed.

As an example of how to pray the Word, we can look at Psalm 1 from above: “God, please make me like the tree in Psalm 1. I want to be firmly planted by Your life-giving Word, growing fruit you have for me in the seasons You determine. Please rescue me from withering and help me prosper for Your glory.”

He lovingly guided me through this beautiful practice as I healed and gained strength. He showed me that when I wrapped myself in His Word, His Word was the answer to my cry.

Through it, I felt the Lord reveal to me the pattern I now live by: Write, Read, Apply, and Pray. WRAP Yourself in the Word™ is a simple practice in Scripture that I have developed, so others might discover the healing and strength found in abiding in His Word.

He answered my cry, and He will answer yours too. Trust that His Word is true and that He is faithful. Your healing and strength matter to our loving God, and there is hope in His Word.
