1. Followers of Jesus Were Called Christians Nearly 2,000 Years Ago
After Jesus was crucified, rose again, and returned to Heaven, He gave those who believed in Him a clear mission. Jesus said to go make disciples (Matthew 28:18-20). A disciple is someone who follows the ways of their Master.
As the message spread that Jesus was the Christ, the One God chose to take away the sins of the world, many people started to believe in Jesus.
Soon, as more disciples shared the Good News about Christ Jesus, people started to refer to them as Christians (Acts 11:26). The name stuck, and “Christians” is how we refer to disciples of Jesus today.
2. Over Two Billion People Call Themselves Christians Today
Our world is filled with more than 8 billion people, and 2.6 billion of them say they are Christians. This makes Christianity the biggest religion in the world.
Did you know that Jesus was not just speaking to His first followers when He told them to go into the world and make disciples? That command, called the Great Commission, is meant for all Christians, including children.
You don’t need to travel to faraway places to tell people about Jesus. You can share the Gospel with your friends, family, and classmates.
3. The Church is People, Not Just a Building
Many Jesus followers gather in a building to hear God’s Word preached. This place of worship is called a church. But in Scripture, the word “church” also describes the people of God.
Scripture describes followers of Christ as living stones. We all fit together to build God’s house, and Jesus is our firm foundation (1 Peter 2:5).
4. Ancient Christians Used a Secret Symbol to Represent Faith
When Jesus’ church grew, powerful people opposed to the Gospel became angry. They didn’t want Jesus’ followers to increase. They set out to punish and harm anyone fulfilling the Great Commission. But their anger didn’t stop believers.
Instead, believers created a secret symbol to share their faith. The fish-shaped symbol is called an ICHTHYS, which meant, “Jesus Christ, God’s Son, Savior.”
In ancient times, Christians etched the symbol on doors, trees, and cave entrances to mark secret gathering places. Today, you may see this symbol on things like jewelry or bumper stickers as a way for Christians to show others they belong to Jesus.

5. The Bible is No Ordinary Book
The Bible is the most important book in the world because it contains God’s message to His people. God used approximately 40 writers to record His words, ideas, and instructions in the Bible.
That’s why 2 Timothy 3:16 tells us that God inspired all Scripture. Because of this, we can trust that every word is true and powerful. His words teach, correct, and train Christians to follow His ways.
No other book in history has sold as many copies or changed as many lives as God’s Holy Bible.
6. The Bible Tells One Story: God’s Story
The Bible features 66 smaller books. There are 39 books in the Old Testament and 27 in the New Testament. Those small books work together to tell one big story. Scripture reveals who God is and tells us His plans for all time.
From the start of the Bible in Genesis to the end in Revelation, you can find stories, examples, and instruction to guide you through any situation. His Word gives us a clear understanding of the God who created us and saved us through Jesus.
7. The Bible was the First Book Printed in the West
In ancient times, people didn’t have books. Instead, they told stories and wrote on animal skins or paper made from plant fibers.
The first versions of the Bible were handwritten on sacred scrolls, rolled into tubes, and placed in clay jars to protect the words.
In the early 1450s, a German inventor named Johannes Gutenberg created a machine called a printing press to print many books quickly. The first book Gutenberg printed was the Bible.
Today, there are an estimated 5 billion printed Bibles sold or distributed worldwide.
8. The First American Schools were Established to Teach Kids How to Read the Bible
In 1647, the Massachusetts Bay Colony General Court decreed that every town should have elementary schools. Those first schools had one mission: to teach children to read the Bible.
Students of all ages learned to read, study, and memorize Scripture under the instruction of a teacher in a one-room schoolhouse set up for that purpose. Subjects like math and science were introduced in public schools years later.

9. The Bible is Full of True Action and Adventure Stories
No other book contains as much action and adventure as the Bible. If you enjoy stories that make your heart race and your breath catch, look no further than Scripture.
In the Bible, you can read about how God parted the sea to lead His chosen people to freedom (Exodus 14). Or how God split apart the earth to swallow a band of rebels (Numbers 16). You can read about Ehud, Israel’s left-handed hero who killed a wicked king, then escaped through a bathroom window (Judges 3:12-30). You can discover the story of the boy named David who killed a giant with a slingshot (1 Samuel 17:1-11).
The Bible even tells us that after Jesus died, many people were raised from the dead and were seen alive again by many people (Matthew 27:52).
10. The Bible is Full of True Miraculous Stories
Strange and miraculous things sometimes happened in biblical times when God was on the move.
Here are just a few Bible stories that may shock you: In Numbers 22:21-35, a donkey speaks to the prophet Balaam. In Joshua 10:12, God stops time to help the Israelites win a battle. In Jonah 1 and 2, the prophet Jonah is swallowed by a huge fish and then spat out. In Matthew 14:13-21, Jesus feeds over 5000 people with just five loaves of bread and two fish.
Finally, the most miraculous story in the Bible is when Jesus, God’s only Son, came back to life after being crucified on the cross to die for our sins (Matthew 28, Mark 16, Luke 24, John 20). This true story is the most fun fact about Christianity! Our God loves us so much that He sent His only Son to die so that we can live forever in a close relationship with Him.
