Finding Your Purpose: What the Bible Says About Calling

“What is my purpose?” It’s a question most of us have wrestled with more than once.

Deep down, we don’t just want to exist. We want our lives to matter. We desire to know we’re not wasting what we’ve been given. We long to make an impact that lasts, both now and into eternity.

That desire isn’t random. It’s God-given. You weren’t created by accident. You were created on purpose, for a purpose.

Finding Your Purpose Isn’t a Mystery

The truth is, we’ve overcomplicated “finding our purpose in life.” We treat it like something we have to chase down and figure out, instead of something God has already clearly laid before us.

In His kindness, Jesus doesn’t leave us guessing. In Matthew 22:37–39, when He is asked what the greatest commandment is, His answer isn’t mysterious or complicated. It’s actually quite clear and direct:

You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. On these two commandments depend all the Law and the Prophets.

This mission isn’t reserved for a select few—it’s for every one of us who belongs to Christ. Our purpose was the same yesterday, is the same today, and will be the same twenty years from now: to love God and to love people.

Each of us shares this common purpose, but how we live it out will look different. Your calling won’t look the same as mine or anyone else’s. Not your neighbor’s, your pastor’s, or even your best friend’s.

You Were Created for Specific Works

Ephesians 2:10 reminds us, “For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.”

There is only one you. And God, the Creator of the universe, has given you specific assignments to walk in as you love Him and love others. He has uniquely equipped you with spiritual gifts, natural abilities, and spheres of influence to carry out the work He has prepared just for you.

Nowhere in Scripture will you find your name attached to a detailed list of specific assignments. And if it worked that way, it would remove our need to rely on the Holy Spirit. It would take away the deep intimacy we’re invited into as we walk closely with Jesus, learning to depend on Him to accomplish what He’s called us to do.

While the Bible doesn’t spell out every specific work God has prepared for us, He also doesn’t leave us to figure it out on our own (thank goodness). Instead, He has graciously given us spiritual tools to help us live on mission.

How to Discover the Works God Has Prepared for You

As we live a life of purpose, God meets us on the path of our assignment. He hasn’t left us without direction. Rather, He has given us access to spiritual resources to guide us as we live bold, obedient lives.

Here are a few that have been helpful in my own life, as well as in the lives of many others:

1. Seek God

Scripture tells us that when we need wisdom, we can ask God, and He gives it generously (James 1:5).

There are moments in life when we come to a crossroads, unsure of what to step into or step away from. In those moments, pause. Turn your gaze to God and ask Him what to do. When our hearts are set on seeking His will, He is faithful to lead us.

2. Invite the Holy Spirit to Help You

In John 14:26, the Holy Spirit is described as our “Helper.”

When you’re unsure of what God is calling you to on a given day, invite the Holy Spirit to guide you. Ask Him to show you where to go, what to do, and who to love. The Holy Spirit dwells within you. He is always with you, never leaves you, and faithfully highlights your next steps.

3. Assess What God Has Equipped You With

As a follower of Jesus, you have been given spiritual gifts to build up others (1 Cor. 12:7).

In addition, God has given you natural abilities and life experiences that can be used for His purposes. One helpful exercise is to reflect on your life and ask:

  • Where have I seen God use me to build up someone else’s faith?
  • What comes naturally to me that blesses others?
  • What stirs my heart or makes me think, I was made for this?

Maybe it’s teaching, hosting, encouraging, creating, leading, or serving in quiet, unseen ways. Often, these moments reveal the gifts and abilities God has placed within you to glorify Him and impact others.

God is with you on this journey, desiring to guide you into the works He has prepared for you to walk in. Scripture promises that when we seek Him, we will find Him (Jer. 29:13).

4. Ask Others

Sometimes, we can’t see clearly what God has placed inside of us. We may believe lies about who we are or what we’ve been created to do, which can leave us with a distorted view of ourselves and our abilities.

But the people who love us often see us with fresh eyes.

If you’re unsure of your gifts or what God has given you, ask someone you trust what they see in you. You might be surprised by what they say.

How to Walk in Your Calling Every Day

There isn’t a perfect formula for finding your purpose. It’s not as simple as x + y = z, but it doesn’t have to be complicated either.

Each morning, before your feet hit the ground, ask Jesus to direct your steps. Invite Him to help you stay attentive to the Holy Spirit. Then, step into your day with intention looking for ways to glorify Him and love the people right in front of you.

As you do this consistently, you’ll begin to recognize patterns. You’ll discover what you’re naturally drawn to, the people you’re called to serve, and the ways God uses you most.

Most importantly, ask Him to shape your heart to desire a life marked by purpose, obedience, and love. He is faithful to lead you, one step at a time.

This is how we begin to walk in what the Lord has for us—not by figuring it all out at once, but by leaning on Him each day to reveal what we need to know, when we need to know it.

Reflection Questions

  • What has God already placed in your hands to faithfully steward?
  • Who can you intentionally show the love of God to this week?
  • When have you had a moment where you thought, I was made for this?

A Prayer for Walking in Your Calling

Jesus, thank You for creating me with purpose. Help me to faithfully love You, love others, and walk in the good works You have prepared for me. When I feel unsure, direct my steps. Open my eyes to what You’ve already placed in my hands, and use my life to make a kingdom impact. Amen.

Keep Seeking the Purpose God Has for You

You were created on purpose, for a purpose, and that truth doesn’t change even on the days when your next step feels unclear. If you’re still working out what it looks like to walk faithfully in your calling, these resources will help you keep moving forward with confidence and prayer.
