For some high school graduates, the future feels exhilarating, where seemingly infinite possibilities exist. But for others, the future seems terrifying, with the unknown looming like a cliff. And sometimes, it can feel like both.
When I was nearing the end of high school, I felt very anxious about the future. Worries and fears about going to college and choosing a career regularly filled my mind due to the pressure I put on myself to determine all my next steps.
But even in that stressful season, the Lord never failed me. He got me through the apprehension, confusion, and doubt. Now, I wish I could tell my younger self to simply trust and obey Him.
If you’re standing at the edge of that cliff right now and preparing to graduate from high school or perhaps you’re trying to encourage someone in that season, you can find life-giving wisdom in Scripture. My hope is that as you meditate on the five Bible verses for high school graduates below, you’ll discover God’s wonderful promises and choose to follow Him in faith and obedience.
1. Psalm 20:7
Some trust in chariots and some in horses, but we trust in the name of the LORD our God.
I haven’t fought in an ancient battle, and therefore haven’t trusted in chariots and horses. But I have relied more on people and things than my Creator and Savior.
Years ago, I put my confidence in my four-year plan, outlining all the classes I needed to take in order to graduate in four years, even though it didn’t truly help me succeed. It was a fallible plan made by fallible people. It offered guidance, but it couldn’t guarantee a successful outcome.
It’s good to use the resources and tools God has given us. For example, if we were fighting in a battle, we would certainly benefit from using weapons to fight off an enemy. However, God is the reason we can succeed because He provides the victory—not chariots or horses (or four-year plans).
2. Psalm 37:5
Commit your way to the LORD; trust in him, and he will act.
During high school, I felt like I needed answers to all my questions about the future. But honestly, I needed faith more than I needed specifics. God graciously guided me along the path He wanted me to take as I followed Him—one step at a time.
We can struggle over which path to choose after high school because there are so many options. Some high school graduates start new jobs right away, while others go to college or trade school.
No matter what path we choose, the main thing we need to focus on is trusting and obeying the Lord. He’ll give us the direction to move forward when we commit to following Him.
3. Proverbs 16:9
The heart of man plans his way, but the LORD establishes his steps.
Many high school graduates have hopes and dreams for the future. I certainly did. I just didn’t know if they would come to pass or not. During that season of uncertainty, Proverbs 16:9 was my favorite Bible verse because it reminded me that God was sovereign over my hopes and dreams.
Though we can attempt to map out the future, the Lord already knows what lies ahead of us and how we’ll get there. Rather than focusing on our hopes and dreams, let’s focus on our Creator and Savior who establishes our steps.
4. Matthew 6:33
But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.
This Bible verse appears immediately after Jesus’ teaching on trusting God to provide. From food to drink to clothing, He addresses His listeners’ basic needs and promises to supply them as long as they put Him first. I love this Bible verse because it beautifully and succinctly summarizes how followers of Jesus are called to prioritize Him.
This is such an incredible promise, but it’s easy to overlook when we feel stressed about the future. Although the Lord knows that anxiety is our natural response to stress, allowing Him to meet our needs while we seek His kingdom and righteousness is a far more fulfilling alternative. The things we’re tempted to be anxious about—perhaps going to job interviews or applying for trade school or signing up for college classes—are things we need to intentionally (and continually) surrender to Him.
5. Matthew 11:28
Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.
When I was getting ready to graduate, I carried the heavy burden of figuring out my future. I worried about which major to select (and which ones to avoid), believing I would get the “perfect” career if I selected the “perfect” major. I didn’t know it at the time, but I would eventually realize there was no such thing as the perfect major or the perfect career.
Jesus offers an alternative to carrying heavy burdens: rest. The invitation He extended to His listeners in the first century is the same invitation He extends to us today. When we come to Him, learn from Him, and imitate Him, we can find the rest we’ve been longing for.
Applying the Bible Verses for High School Graduates
Since high school, I’ve realized that it’s okay to not know the future. God knows it, and He’s in control of it. Even though I have limited knowledge and understanding, I follow the one whose understanding is infinite and whose power is abundant (Ps. 147:5). Trusting and obeying Him should be my first priority.
It’s normal to have questions about the future, but if your questions have turned into worries or fears, give those to God. Ask Him to reveal His will and provide direction. Commit to following Him no matter where He leads you.
Ultimately, that’s what Psalm 20:7, Psalm 37:5, Proverbs 16:9, Matthew 6:33, and Matthew 11:28 call us to do. These wonderful truths from Scripture offer the peace, comfort, and guidance that high school graduates need.
